McAuliffe trailing Deeds in Va. gov. race

RICHMOND, Va., June 5 (UPI) -- With the Virginia Democratic gubernatorial primary four days away, Terry McAuliffe has a big cash lead but trails in the latest poll, campaign officials say.

McAuliffe, the former Democratic National Committee chairman and campaign manager for Hillary Rodham Clinton, has raised roughly three times more than his opponents since the last campaign finance period ended last week, figures from the Virginia Public Access Project report.

A poll released by Suffolk University on Thursday showed McAuliffe trailing State Sen. Creigh Deeds, who has enjoyed a surge of popularity in recent weeks.

Deeds leads the race with 29 percent support, compared to 26 percent for McAuliffe and 23 percent for former Delegate Brian J. Moran. Twenty-two percent remain undecided.

McAuliffe has raised $304,000, compared to $134,600 raised by Deeds and about $45,000 by Moran.
