Police: 'Dr. Death' might still be alive

BERLIN, May 4 (UPI) -- German police say they believe the Nazi war criminal known as "Dr. Death" may still be alive despite reports he died in 1992.

Investigators have examined the documents that media outlets used as evidence to say Aribert Heim died in Egypt of cancer in 1992, and have concluded that Heim had more people helping him evade capture than previously assumed, Der Spiegel reported Monday. Heim also received money through bank transfers from the United States and Switzerland, the report said.

Heim was an Austrian physician in the SS. He is alleged to have killed hundreds of concentration camp inmates during World War II by conducting medical experiments such as injecting toxic compounds into their hearts.

He was arrested by U.S. forces in 1945, and was held for more than two and a half years. For reasons that remain unclear, he was never prosecuted.
