Marine arrested with gun, ammo at airport

BOSTON, April 20 (UPI) -- A U.S. Marine corporal has been charged with carrying an automatic weapon, ammunition and bomb-making materials in his luggage, officials say.

The Marine, identified as Cpl. Justin Reed, was held Monday at the Massachusetts State Patrol barracks in Boston's Logan Airport in lieu of $50,000 bail and was set for an arraignment Tuesday at East Boston Municipal Court, The Boston Globe reported.

Transportation Security Administration spokeswoman Ann Davis said screeners discovered the gun, ammo and bomb materials while Reed was laying over in Boston during a flight between Las Vegas and Charlotte, N.C., only because his luggage was mistakenly sent to a baggage carousel there instead of transferred to the Charlotte flight, the newspaper said.

Davis reportedly said the TSA was "actively investigating" why the materials, which included fuel and explosives, evaded the initial baggage screening in Las Vegas.

The Globe said among items allegedly collected from Reed's bags included a locked gun box containing a semiautomatic handgun; a fully loaded gun magazine; several boxes of ammunition; and model rocket engines containing an explosive mixture.
