Zimbabwe opposition says no deal reached

PRETORIA, South Africa, Jan. 27 (UPI) -- Southern African leaders say they have negotiated a long-sought power-sharing agreement for Zimbabwe, but an opposition group says there's no deal.

After hosting talks in Pretoria, South Africa, between Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe and Movement for Democratic Change leader Morgan Tsvangirai, the Southern African Development Community said Tuesday it has produced a deal in which Tsvangirai would become Zimbabwe's prime minister next month, CNN reported.

But Tsvangirai quickly countered by saying the MDC had not signed off on any deal. The opposition leader said the MDC's concerns about Mugabe refusing to cede power over key aspects of the government remained unresolved. The group also said the SADC's negotiation process was unfair.

"As far as the merits are concerned, our expectation was again that SADC would come up with a just resolution to the outstanding issues in the interest of Zimbabwe and all the parties concerned," CNN reported an MDC statement saying. "It was our expectation that the SADC processes would be aboveboard and beyond reproach."

The MDC said the Tuesday deal fails to resolve how the two sides would share control of the Cabinet ministry that oversees the police, CNN reported.
