Tsvangirai returns to Zimbabwe

HARARE, Zimbabwe, Jan. 17 (UPI) -- Rival leader Morgan Tsvangirai said he returned to Zimbabwe Saturday to renew power-sharing talks with President Robert Mugabe.

Tsvangirai spent much of the last two months in Botswana after leaving Zimbabwe for a summit in November and then being denied a valid Zimbabwean passport to re-enter the country, the BBC reported Saturday.

Tsvangirai, Zimbabwe's prime minister-designate and the leader of the Movement for Democratic Change, said his new passport was issued Christmas Day after a 6-month wait.

Tsvangirai told reporters he and Mugabe are to meet Monday to renew stalled talks about a 4-month-old government power-sharing agreement, the BBC reported.

Tsvangirai cautioned, however, he will not be "bulldozed into an agreement which does not meet the aspirations of the people of Zimbabwe."

Tsvangirai returns to the impoverished country amid a worsening cholera epidemic that has killed at least 2,225 people and infected another 42,000, the BBC reported.
