Odd mix in top 10 cars stolen in Canada

TORONTO, Dec. 17 (UPI) -- Three models of 13-year-old cars are among the 10 most stolen models, the Insurance Bureau of Canada's annual report on car theft said Wednesday.

From claims filed in the last year, the IBC said the 2000 Honda Civic Sir was the top choice for thieves, followed by the 1999 version of the same model. Third was the 2004 Subaru Impreza WRX/WRX STi 4-door AWD. Fourth and fifth were versions of the 1995 Dodge/Plymouth Caravan/Voyager.

The next five were Acuras, Audis, and Dodge/Plymouth Neons, all predating 2002, the report said.

"These older vehicles are easier to steal, they have no approved anti-theft electronic immobilizers, and there are so many of them on the road that a stolen one can just blend in. That's why they tend to be used to commit other crimes," said Rick Dubin, vice president of investigations for IBC.

The report said thieves are also stealing high-end four-wheel drive vehicles like the Hummer H2, Cadillac Escalade, Lexus RX350, BMWX5, Mercedes Benz GL450, Lincoln MKX and Toyota RAV4 in greater numbers, but they are often "stolen to order" by organized crime rings, and shipped abroad.

There was a three-way tie for first among cars stolen the least: the 2003 Cadillac Deville 4-door, the 2002 Lincoln Continental 4-door and the 2001 Lincoln Town Car 4-door.
