NBA's Bing among Detroit mayor field

DETROIT, Sept. 19 (UPI) -- Detroit's police chief and former NBA star Dave Bing indicated Friday they were set to throw their hats into the ring for the Motor City's next mayoral race.

Bing told the Detroit News he would be announcing his candidacy in a few weeks while Police Chief Benny Napoleon said he had already obtained the petitions to get his name on the ballot.

The race will complete the unexpired term of Kwame Kilpatrick, who resigned amid a political scandal that led to his indictment. The filing deadline is Oct. 14 with the primary election in February and the run-off between the two top vote-getters on May 5.

The News said other likely candidates include Wayne County Sheriff Warren Evans and Kilpatrick's former counsel, Sharon McPhail. Interim Mayor Ken Cockrel, who was sworn into office Friday, has also said he planned to run.
