MDC leaders arrested in Ziimbabwe

HARARE, Zimbabwe, April 20 (UPI) -- The opposition party in Zimbabwe's contentious presidential election said Sunday police arrested dozens of its members.

Police began arresting members of the Movement for Democratic Change Tuesday following protests over the government's refusal to cede victory.

Movement party officials said two recently elected members of Parliament, Innocent Matibiri and Luke Tamborinyoka, were arrested along with freelance journalist Frank Chikowore for allegedly setting fire to a bus, CNN reported Sunday.

Police arrested other Movement party officials on charges of preventing people from going to work during protests Tuesday.

The opposition party lost several appeals to force the Zimbabwean election commission to release official results it claims hand opposition candidate, Morgan Tsvangirai, the presidency.

Zimbabwean officials, instead, asked the election commission to recount votes in 23 districts where the ZANU-PF party of President Robert Mugabe cited counting irregularities.
