Dalai Lama preaches tolerance on U.S. tour

SEATTLE, April 16 (UPI) -- The Dalai Lama held a panel discussion on religious tolerance Wednesday in Seattle with Archbishop Desmond Tutu and other religious leaders, reports said.

The Dalia Lama and about a half dozen others fielded questions on anger in the face of oppression from a Seattle audience on the final day of a five-day Seeds of Compassion event at the University of Washington's Edmundson Pavilion, The Seattle Times reported.

Tutu sent a message of experiencing a sense of elation when he heard stories of generosity and forgiveness from those who suffered violence in South Africa during apartheid.

The Dalia Lama took the opportunity to preach a message of religious tolerance in the shadow of widespread protest against the Beijing Olympics by Tibetan activists.

"I think everyone, ultimately, deep inside (has) some kind of goodness," he said.

The Dalia Lama arrives in Ann Arbor, Mich., Saturday with Gelek Rimpoche, the nephew of the 13th Dalia Lama.

Rimpoche says the Dalia Lama chose to visit the Midwest to deliver a message of hope to the economically depressed area, the Ann-Arbor (Mich.) News said.
