Ontario child porn sweep nets 22

TORONTO, Feb. 12 (UPI) -- The largest-ever crackdown on child pornography in Ontario by 19 police forces has resulted in 22 arrests, the provincial police chief announced in Toronto.

Backed by representatives of 18 Canadian municipal forces at a Tuesday news conference, Ontario Provincial Police Commissioner Julian Fantino said the investigation began last month and involved 25 search warrants being executed in 16 communities Monday.

The 22 people face 73 charges related to possessing or sharing child pornography on the Internet, Fantino said.

A woman was among those arrested, along with a juvenile, police said. The oldest suspect was a 64-year-old man, and four other arrests were pending, the OPP said.

"It is appropriate that we are here today, making this announcement on Safer Internet Day," Fantino said "It is a day recognized in 43 countries worldwide to highlight the need to make the Internet a safe and useful tool for our children."
