Bush ushered in, out with applause, cheers

WASHINGTON, Jan. 28 (UPI) -- U.S. President George Bush shook hands, clasped shoulders and accepted well-wishes as he prepared to deliver his State of the Union Address.

"Thanks for the ride," one member of Congress told Bush Monday night as he made his way to the podium to address Congress, his Cabinet, the joint chiefs of staff, the U.S. Supreme Court, invited guests and a national audience via television. The only Cabinet member absent was Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne, who was tapped to stay away in case of a catastrophic event.

Flanking Laura Bush in the first lady's box were daughters Jenna and Barbara, who reportedly were attending their first State of the Union address.

After several minutes of applause and cheers, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., said, "Members of Congress, I have the high privilege and the distinct honor of introducing the president of the United States."

Applause and cheers again broke out before he began.

After the address, Bush signed autographs and engaged in chit-chat as he left the chamber.

"Great speech," someone said.

"I enjoyed giving it," he said.
