Postman sentenced for undelivered mail

SASKATOON, Saskatchewan, Jan. 25 (UPI) -- A Canadian mailman who tried to quit his job was sentenced to probation after 3,500 pieces of undelivered mail were found in his van and home, a report said.

The guilty plea by Mark Lee Davie, 29, of Saskatoon brought an abrupt end to his trial on theft charges, The Saskatoon StarPhoenix reported Friday. He was sentenced to 12 months probation and fined $575.

Despite the guilty plea, Davie insists he didn't steal the bundles of mail stored in his van, his bedroom and under the back deck of his home.

Davie said after quitting his postal delivery job he called Canada Post twice asking that someone come and pick up the undelivered mail. When no one showed up, Davie says he eventually forgot about it.

Police were called to his home after a neighbor spotted the mail Davie had placed under the deck.

Included among the bundles was mail containing checks from the government, notices about packages for pick-up and personal letters, the newspaper said.
