Poll: Romney leads in Michigan

DETROIT, Jan. 13 (UPI) -- A Detroit Free Press poll indicates Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney is headed for victory in Michigan's Tuesday primary.

Romney, the former Massachusetts governor whose father George Romney was a Michigan governor in the 1960s, leads Arizona Sen. John McCain, 27 percent to 22 percent, the Detroit Free Press-Local 4 Michigan Poll indicated.

Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee trails third with 16 percent support, the Free Press reported Sunday.

Of the 40 percent of respondents who named the economy as their No. 1 concern, Romney had a 42 percent to 25 percent advantage over McCain, who won last week's New Hampshire primary.

Of those Republicans who say the Iraq war is the most important issue, McCain has a similar lead over Romney.

Independent voters in the poll favored McCain over Romney by 5 percentage points, but Romney holds an 11-point edge among self-identified Republicans in the Great Lakes State.

The telephone survey was conducted Wednesday through Friday of 600 people who said they definitely will vote in Tuesday's primary. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.
