CNN poll good news for Democrats

WASHINGTON, Jan. 12 (UPI) -- A poll released Saturday indicates Democratic presidential hopefuls Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama both would do well against most of the Republican field.

John McCain is the only one of the leading Republicans who would match up well against the two Democratic front-runners, the CNN/Public Opinion Research Corp. poll said. Matched against either, he would get 48 percent of the vote to 50 percent for Clinton and 49 for Obama if the election was held now.

Clinton has more definite supporters than any other candidate, with 37 percent saying they would certainly vote for her if she becomes the Democratic candidate. Only 19 percent said they were not Clinton supporters but might change their minds, suggesting most of the electorate has an opinion about her.

Mitt Romney fared the worst of the Republican leaders, with 62 percent saying they would not vote for him versus only 13 percent who said they were definite supporters. More than half of those surveyed, 55 percent for Rudy Giuliani and 52 percent for Mike Huckabee, would not vote for either.

The telephone survey reached 1,033 people, 840 of them registered voters. The margin of error is plus or minus 3 percent.
