Evangelist's husband: She was the abuser

ATLANTA, Dec. 20 (UPI) -- Bishop Thomas Weeks III, the Atlanta minister in the midst of a nasty divorce from evangelist Juanita Bynum, said his wife was the one who abused him.

Weeks faces an assault charge for allegedly assaulting Bynum in a parking lot in August. He told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that hundreds of people have left the Global Destiny church, where he is senior pastor, since Bynum made the allegation.

In a lengthy interview, he described the marriage as difficult, calling it a "heated fellowship." He said that he and Bynum did go to counseling.

"I never hit or did anything to physically harm her," he said. "I have been the one that has been physically abused. I kept it quiet and silent for over 90 days. I have been struck on the face and in the head ... with a fist. I have been choked."

Bynum and Weeks married in a civil ceremony in Las Vegas in 2002, four years after they first met. They had a televised religious ceremony the next year.
