New Jersey governor undergoes surgery

CAMDEN, N.J., Sept. 17 (UPI) -- New Jersey Gov. Jon Corzine underwent successful surgery on his left thigh Monday in Camden, N.J., said Dr. Robert Ostrum, who performed the surgery.

"He tolerated the procedure well. It really was an uneventful surgery," said the doctor, who works at the Cooper University Hospital.

Ostrum removed between 5 and 10 pounds of excessive bone growth from the middle of Corzine's femur, reported the New Jersey Star-Ledger.

"It was a good amount, a lot," Ostrum said. "He weighs less now than when he arrived. "

The surgery, which took 1 hour and 15 minutes, was an attempt to alleviate some of the governor's discomfort and allow his leg to bend fully after it was fractured in two places in an April 12 car accident.

The extra bone growing from the femur limited Corzine's range of motion in his knee to a 90-degree bend rather than a 140-degree bend.
