Polish PM: Early polls in two months

WARSAW, Poland, Aug. 28 (UPI) -- Poland’s prime minister Tuesday told the nation the most suitable date for early parliamentary elections would be Oct. 21, Polish Radio reported.

Polish Prime Minister Jaroslaw Kaczynski said the final date for elections would depend on opposition parties’ stands when parliament convenes Sept. 7 after a summer recess.

Poland’s largest opposition groups, the Civic Platform and the Democratic Leftist Alliance, would have to vote in favor of dissolution of parliament.

Kaczynski told Polish Radio One the opposition parties must back their own intentions to dissolve parliament and open a way for early elections.

The Kaczynski’s ruling coalition has been on the brink of collapse for several months due to interparty political disagreements and the opposition’s allegations government members were involved in reported corruption and abuse of power scandals.

Kaczynski said his government wouldn't resign unless he was assured the Polish parliament would dissolved itself, leading to early elections.

The next regularly schedule Polish parliamentary elections would be in 2009.
