WARSAW, Poland, Aug. 10 (UPI) -- Poland’s president and the head of a major opposition party agreed an early parliamentary election should be held in the fall, probably in October.
Poland is in the midst of a political crisis due to disagreements within the government’s coalition, and most leaders agreed the election should be held as soon as possible, Polish Radio reported Friday.
Donald Tusk, head of the largest opposition parliamentary party, Civic Platform, said he and Polish President Lech Kaczynski agreed the early election was necessary and October seemed the most likely time for it, the report said.
The election should resolve the crisis that left the three-party ruling coalition without needed support in parliament.
In mid-July, Polish Prime Minister Jaroslaw Kaczynski sacked Andrzej Lepper, head of the junior Self Defense coalition party, as deputy prime minister and agriculture minister. Kaczynski is involved in a corruption investigation.
On Sunday, Lepper’s Self Defense party decided to leave the coalition and withdraw its ministers from the government.
