Russia angry over extradition refusal

MOSCOW, July 6 (UPI) -- Boris Berezovsky, the Russian oligarch living in London, should lose his refugee status, the Russian prosecutor general said Friday.

The Crown Prosecution Service in Britain announced Monday that Berezovsky, in a newspaper interview, called for civil disobedience, not the violent overthrow of the Russian government. The British government has refused to extradite or prosecute Berezovsky.

"Calls for a violent change of power are a criminal offense in any civilized country," a representative of the public prosecutor said, Novosti reported. "The Prosecutor General's Office does not share its British colleagues' view."

Berezovsky, a former ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin, faces charges in Russia that include money laundering, fraud and conspiracy to overthrow the government. On Friday, a Moscow court postponed until next week a trial in absentia on charges that Berezovsky embezzled more than $8 million from Aeroflot, the Russian national airline.
