Israeli's Olmert denies contacting Syria

JERUSALEM, June 10 (UPI) -- Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has reportedly denied having contact with Syria or considering peace talks with the Arab nation.

The Jerusalem Post Sunday cited sources saying Olmert assured Member of Knesset Effi Eitam neither he nor anyone in his cabinet have been in contact with Syria.

Deputy Prime Minister Shaul Mofaz was widely quoted Saturday saying Israel was engaged in communication with Syria through "secret channels."

YnetNews reported Friday Israel would consider giving up the Golan Heights in return for a peace in which Damascus would cut ties with terrorist groups and Iran.

Zevulun Orlev, leader of the National Union-National Religious Party, accused Olmert of plotting to cede the Golan Heights to stay in power, the Jerusalem Post said.

Orlev warned Golan could not be "erased" like Gush Katif, which was evacuated during Israel's disengagement from Gaza in 2005.
