N.J. gov. to pay his own hospital bills

TRENTON, N.J., April 27 (UPI) -- New Jersey Gov. Jon Corzine plans to use his personal fortune to pay for the hospitalization that followed his car crash, an aide said Friday.

The entire bill could run to "hundreds of thousands of dollars," The Star-Ledger of Newark reported.

"From the Medevac helicopter and hospital stay to the cheeseburgers and strawberry milkshakes, the governor intends to pay for all of it himself," Anthony Coley said.

Corzine suffered critical injuries when his sport utility vehicle struck a guard rail on the Garden State Parkway. The trooper who was driving and another aide escaped with minor injuries, but Corzine, who was not wearing his seat belt, had broken ribs and other broken bones.

Coley said Corzine will move from Cooper Medical Center in Camden to the state's historic governor's mansion, Drumthwacket, near Princeton for his rehabilitation. He had been using the mansion only for official entertaining and ceremonies.

Corzine was in an induced coma for days after the crash. Last week, he was removed from a ventilator and began breathing on his own.

Before entering politics, Corzine was chief executive officer of Goldman Sachs and has a large personal fortune.
