N.J. governor out of intensive care

CAMDEN, N.J., April 24 (UPI) -- New Jersey Gov. Jon Corzine has been released from intensive care 10 days after having his chest crushed and leg broken in a highway accident.

The 60-year-old Democrat suffered a fractured sternum, 11 broken ribs and a fractured left femur, in the April 12 accident.

At a news conference, Dr. Steven Ross, head of the trauma division at the Cooper University Hospital in Camden, N.J., said Corzine is making a speedier recovery than would be expected even of a younger person and was suffering less pain than they would have anticipated, The New York Times reported Tuesday.

Neither doctors nor aides would speculate when Corzine would be able to resume working, the Times said.

Fellow Democrat Richard Codey, president of the state Senate, has been acting governor since the accident. Corzine's SUV with emergency lights flashing was traveling at 91 miles an hour on the Garden State Parkway when it was involved in the accident. The governor wasn't wearing a seatbelt.

Conzine was trying to reach the New Jersey governor's mansion where radio personality Don Imus was meeting with members of the Rutgers women's basketball team.
