New web site urges BBC reporter's release

GAZA CITY, Gaza, April 22 (UPI) -- A new web site keeps the pressure on kidnappers to release BBC reporter Alan Johnston, it was reported Sunday.

"Alan you need to know that those who kidnapped you do not represent the Palestinians," said one message on free-alan.com.

The web site, established by two Palestinians, includes Johnston's biography and messages in Arabic and English calling for his release, the BBC reported Sunday.

Johnston, 44, has not been seen since he was kidnapped at gunpoint on his way home from work in Gaza City on March 12.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in Athens Satuday said that Johnston is alive.

"We are making efforts to get him released," he said. A week ago, militants said they had killed Johnston, but Palestinian officials said they have been unable to verify the claim.

Protests calling for Johnston's release have been held almost daily in Britain, the Palestinian territories and other parts of the Middle East. Johnston had worked in Gaza for three years and was due to finish his assignment there at the end of March.

Johnston was the only Western journalist still permanently based in Gaza.
