No charges for driver in Corzine crash

TRENTON, N.J., April 14 (UPI) -- New Jersey State Police have no plans to charge the driver who inadvertently caused the crash that injured Gov. Jon Corzine.

Police Superintendent Rick Fuentes said Saturday that the driver, a 20-year-old casino worker, told investigators he knew nothing about the crash when he continued on his way.

Fuentes said the driver had pulled off to the shoulder of the Garden State Parkway late Thursday afternoon when a wheel on his pickup truck slipped off the pavement, causing him to pull to the right. He swerved into the path of another truck, and that driver swerved to avoid him, hitting the governor's sport utility vehicle.

State Police have not said whether they would cite Corzine for failing to wear a seat belt. While all front-seat passengers are legally required to buckle up in New Jersey, police have said they generally do not ticket drivers who, like the governor, suffer serious injuries as a result of not using their belts.

A Corzine aide and a state trooper, also in the car, were wearing their seat belts and escaped with minor injuries.
