Former 'comfort woman' demands apology

TOKYO, Feb. 23 (UPI) -- A South Korean woman who was forced into prostitution by Japanese soldiers during World War II says Japan must own up to its actions.

Lee Yong Soo, 78, spoke on a panel with opposition lawmakers who have sponsored a reparations bill, The Japan Times reported. She testified recently before a legislative committee in the United States.

"The Japanese government is always trying to resolve this issue at its own convenience," she said. "They took us and forced us to become comfort women and, even now, they continue to deny the facts."

Lee said the course of her life was determined when Japanese soldiers pulled her from her home in 1944 when she was 14.

"Except for the few wrinkles on my face, I have not changed at all since I was turned into a sex slave at the age of 14. I remained unmarried," Lee said. "I can never forgive the Japanese government."
