Marion Barry facing new tax troubles

WASHINGTON, Feb. 7 (UPI) -- Former Washington Mayor Marion Barry could face prison time for failing to file tax returns for 2005.

The Washington Post says Barry, now a member of the D.C. Council, has failed to live up to a plea agreement made last March over back taxes.

The U.S. attorney's office said Barry "continues to flout" city and federal tax laws, the newspaper said.

Barry was given probation last year instead of the 12 to 18 months he could have faced under sentencing guidelines.

The Internal Revenue Service began garnishing Barry's city council salary last November after he failed to follow through with a payment plan for the taxes he owed between 1999 and 2004, the newspaper said.
