DNA expert: Withholding info was big error

NEW YORK, Jan. 12 (UPI) -- A forensic scientist says he should have reported earlier that he found DNA of other men on a North Carolina woman who accused Duke lacrosse players of rape.

In an interview with the CBS show "60 Minutes" to be aired Sunday, Dr. Brian Meehan called his failure "a big error."

In court hearings, he has said he told Durham County Prosecutor Mike Nifong about the DNA from other men before three members of the lacrosse team were indicted but agreed to limit his report to positive findings. He did not match any members of the lacrosse team.

The mothers of the three indicted players said they learned of Nifong's decision while sitting within a few feet of him in court.

Rae Evans, mother of one of the defendants, David Evans, was asked on "60 Minutes" what she would say to Nifong if she had the chance.

"I would say with a smile on my face, 'Mr. Nifong, you've picked on the wrong families ... and you will pay every day for the rest of your life,'" she said.
