Funeral plans announced for Ford

PALM SPRINGS, Calif., Dec. 27 (UPI) -- The family of former U.S. President Gerald Ford, who died Tuesday, announced Wednesday a series of memorial events beginning Friday in Palm Desert, Calif.

Ford, who died at 93 at his home in Rancho Mirage, Calif., will lie in repose Friday at St. Margaret's Episcopal Church in Palm Desert. Following a prayer service and a private ceremony, the public will be admitted, the (Palm Springs, Calif.) Desert Sun reported.

Ford's casket will leave California for Washington Saturday morning, following departure ceremonies at the church and at Palm Springs International Airport. The plane is expected to arrive at Andrews Air Force Base at 5:20 p.m. EST.

A motorcade carrying the casket will stop at the World War II memorial and continue on to the Capitol for a 7 p.m. state funeral in the Rotunda. Ford will lie in state at the Capitol until a funeral at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday.

A departure service is scheduled for 9:15 a.m., followed by a 10:30 a.m. funeral Washington National Cathedral.

Ford will then be flown to his hometown of Grand Rapids, Mich., where he will lie in repose at the Gerald R. Ford Museum.

Another funeral is scheduled for 2 p.m. Jan. 3 at Grace Episcopal Church, followed by interment at a site near the museum grounds, the newspaper said.
