LAS VEGAS, Aug. 16 (UPI) -- Jack Carter, the son of former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, has won the Nevada Democratic primary for the Senate, but will be an underdog in November voting.

Carter beat middle school science teacher Ruby Jee Tun with 77 percent of the vote in Tuesday's primary. Tun received 9 percent, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported.

In the Republican Senate primary, incumbent Sen. John Ensign, R-Nev., easily downed his challenger, retired automotive executive Edward "Fast Eddie" Hamilton by piling up 90 percent of the vote, the report said.

The newspaper said in one of its recent polls, Ensign leads Carter by 54 percent to 33 percent.

Carter acknowledged he has an uphill climb, but said he'll continue "using shoe leather to get his name out there," the report said.
