Majority think federal govt too secretive

WASHINGTON, Aug. 3 (UPI) -- A poll done for the American Society of Newspaper Editors finds 59 percent of U.S. citizens think the federal government is too secretive.

Forty-five percent said that state and local governments also conceal too much, the Scripps Howard News Service reported.

"People clearly think that their federal government is more secretive than state or local governments. And they are probably right," said Lucy Dalglish, executive director of the Reporters Committee for the Freedom of the Press. "It has become more difficult to get information out of the federal government."

While 86 percent of those surveyed said they are interested in the "actions and activities" of state and local government and 88 percent said they were interested in the actions of the federal government, only a minority had ever attended a hearing or a meeting. Even fewer had ever sought access to government documents.
