Indian P.M.: No changes in nuclear deal

NEW DELHI, July 26 (UPI) -- Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh told Parliament Wednesday he will accept no changes in the nuclear deal he reached with U.S. President George W. Bush.

The agreement was up for a vote in the U.S. House of Representatives. Some representatives had offered amendments that would bar India from adding more nuclear weapons to its arsenal.

In India, opponents said Singh surrendered control to the United States, The Independent reported.

While critics in the United States say the agreement violates the spirit of the treaty on non-proliferation, backers said a more powerful India will counter China's growing economic and military might. They also argue that encouraging nuclear power instead of fossil fuel in India -- one of the world's most populous countries -- will be good for the environment.
