Cancer surgery for Chicago mayor's wife

CHICAGO, July 26 (UPI) -- Maggie Daley, the wife of Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley, is scheduled to undergo outpatient surgery to remove a cancerous breast tumor Thursday.

The Chicago Sun-Times said the mayor would be by the side of his wife of 34 years when the operation is performed under local anesthesia at Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

Maggie Daley, 63, was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2002, but underwent chemotherapy rather than surgical removal of the tumor.

Thursday procedure, which is expected to take about an hour, is to remove residual tumor tissue, the Sun-Times said.

"Because the disease has been so well controlled through therapy over the course of the past four years we are now in the process of beginning treatment of this area," Dr. Steven Rosen, director of Northwestern's cancer program, told the newspaper.
