LITTLETON, Colo., June 17 (UPI) -- Former President Bill Clinton joined the relatives of those killed in a Colorado school massacre at the groundbreaking for a memorial.
Two students at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colo., killed 12 teenagers and a teacher before taking their own lives in 1999.
Clinton spoke during a thunderstorm in a park near the school to a crowd of 4,000, the Washington Post reported. He called Columbine "a momentous event in the history of the country that left every parent feeling helpless -- including the president."
The memorial has been delayed and its fundraising complicated by disputes about the role of law enforcement. A report by the state attorney general found that police had ignored warnings about Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, the two students who carried out the massacre.
Bob Easton, chairman of the memorial committee, said the fundraising goal is $1.5 million and $350,000 is still needed.
