Architect to downsize Sept. 11 memorial

NEW YORK, June 16 (UPI) -- Plans for the memorial to those who died on Sept. 11, 2001, at the World Trade Center in Lower Manhattan are likely to be downsized.

The new plans followed an estimate that the original design would cost $1 billion. New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, New York Gov. George Pataki and New Jersey Gov. Jon Corzine all agreed that the memorial should be capped at $500,000.

Architect Frank Sciame, selected to scale down the plans, showed his re-design to Pataki and Bloomberg on Thursday. He reportedly suggested reducing the size of underground galleries and moving the names of the victims up to the plaza, the New York Post reported.

Citing sources, the newspaper said Sciame gave the officials choices, including eliminating waterfalls -- which they want to keep. His plan would reduce the amount of public space below ground, cutting the problem of moving people around on a number of levels.

Sciame's plan calls for a below-ground museum with its own entrance.
