Australian troops arrive in East Timor

DILI, Timor-Leste, May 25 (UPI) -- Hundreds of Australian peacekeepers are on the ground to quell growing violence in East Timor.

The vanguard, 150 commandos, landed Thursday to be joined by a total force of 1,300 on Friday.

Foreign Minister Jose Ramos Horta met the commandos at the airport, saying he was "very, very happy" to greet them, The Age reported.

At least four people have been killed in fighting between police and military units, and attacks by rebels and roving mobs.

The intervention is Australia's second since East Timor gained independence. The Australians are to be joined by a contingent from New Zealand.

"This is a dangerous mission and a dangerous situation and we must not walk away from the possibility that casualties could be suffered," Australian Prime Minister John Howard said.
