TOKYO, April 11 (UPI) -- Japan says DNA tests show that a South Korean man abducted by North Korea is the father of the daughter of a Japanese woman also kidnapped to North Korea.
The South Korean man is Kim Yong-nam, who was kidnapped by North Korean agents in August 1978. The mother is Megumi Yokota, taken from Japan's Niigata Prefecture in November 1977 when she was 13.
But government sources told Mainichi Shimbun they have not confirmed that Kim Yong-nam is the same person as Kim Chol Jun, who refused to get his DNA tested. North Korea has told Japan that Kim Chol Jun is Yokota's husband.
The Japanese government, at the request of relatives of South Korean abductees, has been testing DNA samples from the relatives of five South Korean men allegedly abducted by the North to see if any of them matched the DNA of Yokota's daughter, Kim Hye Gyong.
The Japanese government has apparently given the results of the DNA tests to North Korean Vice Foreign Minister Kim Kye Gwan, who is visiting Japan. It is also expected to give them to the South Korean government.
