Former aides say Conyers violated ethics

WASHINGTON, March 1 (UPI) -- Former aides of Rep. John Conyers, D-Mich., have sent information to a U.S. House ethics committee and the FBI alleging Conyers violated ethics rules.

The Hill, a Capitol Hill newspaper, said the former aides provided it with documents they say show Conyers demanded aides work on campaigns and forced them to baby-sit and chauffer the congressman's children. The same information was sent to congressional and federal investigators, the newspaper said.

One of the former aides left Conyers' staff in 2000; the other last May. The woman who resigned last year wrote to the House ethics committee, "I could not tolerate any longer being involved with continual unethical, if not criminal, practices which were accepted as 'business as usual.'"

A lawyer for Conyers told The Hill, "We've responded fully and completely over two years to what the ethics committee sent to us and we've not heard anything since then."

The House Committee on Standards of Officials Conduct is reportedly considering which ethics matters, including the Conyers allegations, it should deal with.
