China: 10 sentenced for baby trafficking

HENGYANG, China, Feb. 25 (UPI) -- Ten people have been sentenced to jail for roles in a growing baby trafficking racket in China.

Chen Ming, the head of Hengdong Social Welfare Home in Hengyang, was given a year in jail but is a fugitive.

Nine others were sentenced to jail and 22 officials were fired over a 3-year trade in which children were sold for up to $540.

The BBC reports 78 babies were trafficked in 2005 and then adopted by foreigners.

People involved in the actual kidnapping and trafficking were given sentences from 13 to 15 years in jail.
