Man shot by vice president leaves hospital

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas, Feb. 17 (UPI) -- Harry Whittington, the Republican contributor shot accidentally last week by Vice President Dick Cheney, left a Texas hospital Friday.

Whittington spoke briefly with reporters after his discharge from Christus Spohn Memorial Hospital in Corpus Christi, emphasizing he does not blame Cheney for peppering him with bird shot.

"My family and I are deeply sorry for all that Vice President Cheney has had to go through this past week," Whittington said.

Cheney himself was in Wyoming addressing the state legislature, CNN reported.

The vice president has come under heavy criticism because the White House did not release information immediately. Instead, Katherine Armstrong, owner of the ranch where Cheney and Whittington were hunting quail, called the Corpus Christi Times last Sunday, a day after the incident.

Whittington suffered what was described as a mild heart attack during his hospitalization when some of the birdshot migrated to his heart.
