Houston fugitive found in Louisiana

HOUSTON, Nov. 7 (UPI) -- A condemned killer who walked out of a Houston prison last week has been taken into custody without incident in Shreveport, La.

The Gulf Coast Violent Offenders Task Force got a tip Sunday that led Shreveport police and the U.S. Marshals Service to catch Charles Thompson Sunday night, the Houston Chronicle said.

Thompson was sitting on a bicycle, talking on a pay phone in front of a liquor store, and appeared to be intoxicated, said Lt. John Martin of the Harris County Sheriff's Office.

Thompson, who was awaiting transfer to death row, had gotten loose from handcuffs Thursday, slipped into street clothes and convinced jailers that he was a state investigator.

Chief Deputy Danny Billingsley said the department continues to investigate what went wrong and who may have assisted the escape.

Thompson will be returned to Texas' death row for the 1998 killings of his ex-girlfriend and her boyfriend, the newspaper said.
