Abbas meets Mubarak ahead of U.S. trip

CAIRO, Oct. 17 (UPI) -- Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas discussed the situation in the Palestinian territories Monday in Cairo.

Mubarak spokesman Suleiman Awwad said the talks, which came ahead of Abbas' scheduled trip to Washington this week, paid special attention to the impact of Israel's withdrawal last month.

"We are looking forward to a successful meeting between the Palestinian president and President George Bush, which we hope will open a new chance for reviving the peace process," Awwad said.

Abbas arrived in Cairo Sunday night after holding similar talks in Amman with King Abdullah.

He is expected to travel to Paris later Monday for talks with French President Jacques Chirac and scheduled to meet President Bush on Thursday.
