Egypt denies initiative to help Syria

CAIRO, Oct. 10 (UPI) -- Egypt Foreign Minister Ahmed Abul Ghait on Monday denied a Saudi-Egyptian initiative to put political pressure on Syria.

"We truly believe that there are no pressures at present on Syria, but there are many stories about the upcoming report of German prosecutor Detlev Melhis amd the implementation of Security Council Resolution 1559," Abul Ghait told a news conference with his British counterpart Jack Straw in London.

"We are talking with our Syrian brothers about Mehlis investigation and the situation in Lebanon and we have to wait for the report and than take a decision about it," Abul Ghait added.

Mehlis who is leading a U.N.-commissioned team investigating the Feb. 14 assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri is expected to report on his mission on Oct. 21.

Denying the existence of a Saudi-Egyptian initiative on Syria, Abul Ghait said "everybody is talking about the upcoming report and making conclusions and deductions but we in Egypt ask all to deal with this report carefully in order not to create a new hot spot in the Middle East."

Syria, which dominated Lebanon for years until last April, was alleged to have played a role in Hariri's assassination with the help of Lebanese allies.
