NEW OFRLEANS, La., Sept. 3 (UPI) -- Two major fires broke out along the New Orleans waterfront Saturday as efforts were being stepped up to rescue and evacuate storm victims.
One of the fires struck an industrial district on the river and was threatening to proceed warehouse by warehouse along the stretch, CNN reported. There was reportedly no sign the flames were being fought.
The fires came as a beefed-up contingent of National Guard troops, bringing in food, water and hope, were deployed in the flooded streets to aid residents and control the violence that has gripped the besieged city.
About 2,000 people remained Saturday at the Ernest Morial Convention Center in New Orleans after a day that saw one of the largest evacuations in U.S. history.
At New Orleans' Louis Armstrong International Airport on Saturday, babies slept on flattened cardboard boxes as hundreds of evacuees waited to be airlifted.
On Friday, one man was killed when a bus carrying 50 evacuees overturned north of Lafayette, La.
