Katrina destroys senator's home

PASCAGOULA, Miss., Sept. 1 (UPI) -- Sen. Trent Lott, R-Miss., lost his 154-year-old family home in Pascagoula, Miss., to Hurricane Katrina, it was reported Thursday.

Lott, wife Tricia and their two children were away when the Category 4 hurricane hit the U.S. Gulf Coast, his spokeswoman Susan Irby told the Gannett News Service. All that remained of the house, which faced the Gulf of Mexico but was not on the beach, was a 200-year-old oak tree in the yard, Irby said.

The Lott family owned the Pascagoula residence for about 20 years, raised their children there and visited often, Irby said.

Lott planned to take a helicopter tour of damaged areas Thursday and hold a news conference.
