Taiwan: China military buildup a threat

TAIPEI, Taiwan, Aug. 13 (UPI) -- Taiwan's president is attempting to raise awareness about China's military build up and called it a threat to most of the world.

The Australian reports Taiwan President Chen Shui-bian said China has missiles that can reach as far as Australia, Japan and the United States.

Chen is trying to build more global uneasiness towards China's military presence.

China has 700 missiles positioned across the straits of Taiwan.

Chen said China's missile buildup is more than just a threat to Taiwan but to the whole region, with missiles capable of hitting Japan and Australia.

Chen is calling for Taiwan sovereignty separate from China and says China has rejected any attempts at diplomatic progress.

In March China passed a law that gave the government permission to use force against Taiwan if they attempted to secede.
