Nicaragua: Leader freed from house arrest

MANAGUA, Nicaragua, July 25 (UPI) -- A Nicaraguan judge ruled Monday that former President Arnoldo Aleman could serve the remainder of his 20-year house arrest on probation.

El Nuevo Diario newspaper reported online that Aleman was given a reprieve from his house arrest due to numerous health complications.

The former president, known as the "fat man" for his extreme portliness and extravagant tastes, was sentenced to 20 years on corruption charges.

Aleman was convicted of diverting an estimated $100 million in state funds into his party's coffers for political campaigns.
