Luxembourg approves European constitution

LUXEMBOURG CITY, Luxembourg, July 10 (UPI) -- Some 230,000 Luxembourg voters approved Sunday the European constitution referendum by 56 percent, but it's not clear what impact the vote will have.

European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso said the affirmative vote gave him "great satisfaction," while Luxembourg Prime Minister Jean-Claude Juncker, said the voters' approval proved the treaty was not dead, the BBC reported.

Some analysts believe the European constitution is in danger of failure after recent votes in France and the Netherlands to reject.

"This vote was every bit as important as those in France and the Netherlands," said Juncker. "If Luxembourg had voted 'No,' Europe would be in an ultra-serious crisis, but with this vote we are still in a crisis but a crisis which lets some signs of optimism appear on the horizon."
