Deep Throat: patriot or traitor?

WASHINGTON, June 2 (UPI) -- The drama of Deep Throat's identity over, players of the U.S. Watergate scandal are battling over whether W. Mark Felt is a great patriot or traitor.

Felt admitted he was a primary unnamed source for Washington Post reporters Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein as they investigated the Nixon White House's role in the 1972 Watergate break-in and cover-up. The investigation led to the resignation of President Nixon.

"Nixon apologists will see him (Felt) as a snake; others will see him as a hero," Nixon White House Counsel John Dean told the Christian Science Monitor. Dean also wondered how the No. 2 man at the FBI had time to stealthily deal with Woodward while running the bureau.

But Terry Lenzner, who served as the senior Democratic counsel on the Senate Watergate Committee said without Felt's information, the Nixon administration's misdeeds would never have been reported.
