PA rejects freezing prisoners' release

GAZA, May 8 (UPI) -- The Palestinian Authority rejected Sunday Israel's decision to freeze the release of some 400 Palestinian prisoners from Israeli jails.

Justice Minister Tzipi Livni announced that Israel would not proceed with the release of 400 Palestinian prisoners citing the increase in Palestinian attacks against Israeli targets in recent weeks.

"This is really a clear avoidance to implement Sharm el Sheikh understanding, Israel hasn't fulfilled all its commitments, and we are doing 100 percent efforts," said an official PA statement sent to reporters.

The statement accused Israel "for adopting a policy against the Palestinians that makes their daily life so hard, it violated the truce, and then complains about increase of Palestinian attacks."

On Sunday, a meeting for the Israeli-Palestinian joint committee to discuss the prisoners' release was held, where Palestinian sources closed to the talks said the meeting ended without achieving results.

During the Sharm el Sheikh summit held in February, Israel agreed to release 900 prisoners. Right after the summit, 500 were release.
