Mexico: Mayor says charges will be dropped

MEXICO CITY, May 2 (UPI) -- Mexico City's embattled mayor predicts all corruption charges against him will be dropped.

Mayor Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said he also expects to meet with President Vicente Fox this week to discuss his legal situation, El Universal newspaper reported Monday.

"When they drop those charges, once it is completely proven that we did not commit any crime, then we will move on," Obrador said.

Obrador faces charges stemming from his decision to defy a judge's order in 2001 to halt construction of an access road to a hospital.

His opponents accuse him of abusing his office to further his political ambitions. The popular mayor is considered a virtual lock to win the presidency in 2006 elections.

Earlier this month more than a million people flooded the streets of Mexico City in support of Obrador and his presidential aspirations.

The protests and continuing support for Obrador, however, prompted Fox to sack Attorney General Rafael Macedo last week for his efforts to bring the mayor to trial.
